Review 01_Why We Sleep_Matthew Walker
This is one of the best impactful books I have read till date. The book basically tells us about the significance and importance of our sleep-routine and why following the same for a particular time on a daily basis is necessary, which in return provides the best possible outcomes.
The knowledge provided by the author is so crucial that it makes me awe-struck at times on how our mother nature has designed this beautiful biological act in each and every species. There is a point where the author describes how “Whales used to migrate from one place to another with their new born babies without getting sleep for weeks or even months and their disturbed sleep pattern makes an impact on their life which makes them sleep using half of the brain and use the other half to protect themselves from the threats underwater.
He also mentioned about the stages involved while sleeping namely NREM (Non-Rapid Eye Movement) & REM (Rapid Eye movement) and the benefits and drawbacks if you obtain those to the fullest and vice-versa. Furthermore, the book tells us about “Why these sleep stages vary from age to age (Infant, Adolescent and Older generations) and our internal body clock known as Circadian Rhythm works accordingly”.
In addition to this, it briefly explains how sleep improves the functioning of the neural networks within our brain which processes various tasks like memorizing things, ability to store information, reducing the chances of getting affected by the diseases like Cardiac-arrest, Cancer, Blood Pressure, Diabetes and plays a pivotal role on the usage of electronic devices in our modern-era as well.
Author Matthew Walker, a neuro-scientist in Human sleep science and philosophy, wrote this book with all his 20+ years of experience, constantly urging everyone not to avoid S-L-E-E-P and even gave us a few practical tips to overcome sleeping issues.
Finally, one thing to say which can ultimately decide whether you should read this book or not:
“It nearly takes weeks to recover the sleep-debt that we lost in a single night and if you keep on doing the same then….”.
Thanks for reading !!
